INSPIRATION: What ideas, projects or movements have you seen that make you hopeful about the future of our cities?
VISION: In what ways should we design our cities differently in order to have a sustainable future?
To design our cities differently in order to have a sustainable future, decision-makers should put an emphasize on public transportation rather than only emphasizing on building roads and bridges, as there is a notion that expanding highways and roads reduces congestion, but this does not relieve congestion (and often causes the opposite to happen.)
ACTION: What can your generation do now to bring us closer to this future?
- If your local transit agency offers a program for high school students to promote transit usage at school, you should definitely participate in it! For example, MiWay in Mississauga has recently launched a Student Ambassadors program.
- Be informed of the transit projects being built in your area (i.e. Viva bus lanes in Southern York Region)
- Advocate for better transit in your area if it is lacklustre (i.e. your school is poorly served by your local transit agency) by writing to your local councillors!
